The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Japan Engineer District is nearing completion on the first phase of the Torii Pine neighborhood housing project for Marines, civilians and their families stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. This phase includes 199 housing units consisting of single family, three-plex, four-plex, six-plex and eight-plex structures. 156 units are complete and will soon be made available for residents, with the rest in this phase to be completed by December. Once the multi-phase project is completed, the 80-acre community will incorporate a skate park, a fenced backyard for housing units and a town center - a first for installations in Japan. The center will consist of retail shops, a major franchise restaurant and a new temporary lodging facility.
